Sport
Sport is an opportunity for students to explore new skills and challenges. Every class at our school does a range of PE and sport sessions to ensure that they are active and learning new ways to move and play.
Our school has a long history of impressive sporting achievement so we see many students step forward to lead in this area. This includes our sports house captains for Webb (yellow), Millar (green), Purdue (blue), and Griffith (red); our Learning to Lead Stage 3 students, who support and teach those in Stage 2; and our representative students who belong to school, zone, and regional teams across codes. As a demonstration school, we also host preservice teachers who hone their skills in intensive PDHPE programs that work with small groups of students each semester.
Mayfield West has three sporting carnivals a year that allow our sports houses to compete for “Champion Sport House”, under the leadership of their captains. These events are also when our students have the chance to qualify for Zone events and when they can compete for the honour of being “age campions”. The swimming carnival is held early in the year, with the cross country (distance running) and athletics carnivals held later on. At each of these events, students have the chance to participate for ‘house points’ and to enjoy contributing to a team.
