Attendance

Under the law, children must be enrolled and attend school from the age of six.

Every day matters

At Mayfield West Demonstration School, every day matters. This means that if you are well, you need to be at school and learning with your friends. It also means that if you are unwell, it is crucial that you have time to rest and recover, with the support of a doctor if needed.

It is important to consider the rhythms and routines that regular attendance give a student. Understanding what happens each day in their classroom contributes to their senses of order and structure, which in turn allow them to become more disciplined. Spending unnecessary time away from school can create space for anxious thoughts as we distort what may have happened while we were away.

Missing just one day of school a week means that your child will have missed 20% of their schooling. They will miss eight weeks a year at that rate and by the time they finish Year 12, they will have missed more than two and a half years of learning and time building their support networks.

Why attendance matters

When you child misses school. they miss important opportunities to

  • learn
  • make friends
  • build skills through fun

Minutes lost = days lost per year

A couple of minutes here and there doesn't seem like much, but....
