Transition

Transition is not about if your child is ready for school. It is about making sure we are ready for your child.

Transitioning to Preschool

Joining our preschool is an exciting time. Once you have enquired and received an offer, please ensure that you follow all of the steps communicated to you, including attending mandatory orientation sessions and joining Seesaw. Through these channels, you will learn all that you need to know about coming to preschool for the year before Big School!

Transitioning to Kindergarten

Coming to Kindy is a momentous occasion and our staff are excited to welcome students who have been enrolled at Mayfield West Demonstration School. Through our school orientation sessions, you and your child will learn all that you need to know about what to expect each day and what you need to do to get ready for Big School. In these sessions, you are you child will connect with others who are starting their journey.

There are four sessions, and it is important for children and parents to attend all sessions.

During this time, students will engage with a range of activities and will be observed in their interactions with others so we can consider their class placement. Parents will engage in information sessions in the hall run by key members of our staff.

Transitioning to High School

Students leaving our school to go to high school are making an important transition. We work with our public high schools to provide the information and supports that they require as they place and guide students in this journey.  There may be enhanced transition pathways for some students.

Most of our students move on to Callaghan College Waratah Campus with a few each year attending Selective High School Placements including Merewether High School, Hunter School of Performing Arts and Hunter Sports High School.

Selective high schools

Selective high schools are for high potential and gifted students in Years 7 to 12. For Year 7 entry, parents apply when their child is at the end of Year 5 or the beginning of Year 6.
