Whole-Child Approach

Wellbeing at our school encompasses the systems and support that are available to all staff and students as well as the individualised, wrap-around measures that are activated in times of need.

Our wellbeing measures are flexible and change to reflect the growing confidence and independence of students. Any 'support' that stops students taking responsibility for their learning and recognising how much they are capable of doing is ultimately unhelpful. We look forward to working with you to ensure that such accommodations are removed as soon as practicable and that they are replaced with scaffolds that encourage students to do more.

Buddy system

At our school, students enrolled in Kindergarten are matched with a buddy or buddies from Stage 3 that will be part of their support network when they start school. This is a special responsibility for our older students and an exciting connection for Kindy. Over time, we encourage buddies to go from assisting at every break to to just being a friendly face on the playground, building the confidence needed for independent play.

Peer support

House system

Mayfield West Demonstration School has four sports houses, Webb (yellow), Millar (green), Purdue (blue), and Griffith (red). When students are enrolled, they are placed into one of these houses, joining a long history of sporting success and pride. Each house has two captains from Year 6, who lead them at sporting carnivals, providing support and encouragement as students work across year groups to strive to become Champion Sport House.
