We are a school that has proudly served our Mayfield community for the last 100 years. Our school emphasises the development of the whole child and offers a tailored, cohesive and evidence-based approach from preschool to Year 6. We are a smaller school with the full offering of educational opportunities within a safe, family-oriented setting in inner city Newcastle.

Our Principal
Mayfield West is Matthew’s third school as principal having begun relieving at the age of 29. A highly experienced school principal, he has now been at Mayfield West for seven years. He is a strong and transformational leader, and his leadership has been studied by several academic researchers. He has personally published academic articles and presented at conferences in America and England. He is a strong advocate for principal colleagues including as the Newcastle delegate for State Council of the Primary Principals Association. Matthew has been a conjoint lecturer at the University of Newcastle and was on the external advisory group for the faculty of education.
Matthew grew up in the central and far west. He had early successes in music, art and sport. Some achievements included being exhibited in ArtExpress, obtaining medals at PSSA and CHS State carnivals. He is a father of three adult children and lives in the local community. Both through his own experiences and as a father he has the necessary strengths and mindset to support the potential, wellbeing and aspirations of our students.
